Abstract
In a world where environmental issues are at the center of all attention, awareness of all citizens is growing. It is no longer conceivable on a planet with finite resources, to continue to consume as if nothing had happened. Overconsumption, the depletion of resources and global warming are the new societal challenges.
Public authorities are also thinking and acting. Initiatives and bills are being published regularly, both at the European and National levels.
In this context, consumer information, particularly through environmental labelling, takes on its full meaning. Better consumption will require more sustainable products. Environmental impact measurements are mainly based on LCA methods which show, beyond the values, the relative importance of the different stages of the life cycle of a shoe. These impacts are only relevant when associated with the notion of product sustainability. To this end, much work is underway to determine the categorization of comparable products for the footwear industry. A list of standardized physical-mechanical tests and associated thresholds that reflect the intrinsic durability of a product in its use are being validated. This work is structuring the footwear industry to take the necessary turn towards ecological transition.
